    ECRI highlights 2020: Inequalities related to COVID-19, growing religious intolerance, backlash against LGBTI people

    The Council of Europe’s anti-racism commission (ECRI) in its 2020 annual report published today, ahead of the International Day against Racial Discrimination marked on 21 March, identified four key challenges Europe was facing last year. These are: mitigating the disproportional impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on vulnerable groups, tackling deep-rooted racism in public life, combating anti-Muslim racism and antisemitism in the face of terrorism, and addressing the backlash against the protection of human rights of LGBTI people.

    PHSO starts to regularly publish casework

    On Thursday 29 April 2021, PHSO started the routine publication of their primary and detailed investigations on their website. You can view their cases on their new publishing platform. They published around 15 of their decisions and will continue to publish cases on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The number of cases they publish will gradually increase over the next few months.

    Poland must apply internationally recognized standards to ensure Ombudsman can operate without interruption

    In view of current developments in Poland, the IOI reissues its official letter of support from October 2020, stating its opinion on provisions regulating the transitional period until a new office holder will be elected for the position of the Polish Commissioner for Human Rights. Poland must apply and consider internationally recognized standards such as the Venice Principles to ensure that the Ombudsman institution is able to fulfil its mandate without interruption in the service of the citizens of Poland.

    The IOI is pleased to present the next issue of its Best Practice Paper series (BPP). Issue 5 puts a focus on the rights of mental health patients, especially those who are involuntarily detained in psychiatric facilities or required to take medical treatment.     Ombudswoman Lora Vidović has submitted to the Croatian Parliament her annual report for the year 2020 containing an analysis of the issues faced by the citizens in the exercise of their human rights and incidences of discrimination.
