Protecting human rights in prisons while preventing radicalization - a guide for detention monitors
Preventing and countering violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism (VERLT) is an area of increasing focus at the international, regional and national levels. This also applies to the prison context, due to fears that prisons may represent breeding grounds for VERLT. In a joint project, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and Penal Reform International (PRI) prepared a guide, which seeks to provide detention monitors with an enhanced understanding of VERLT and discusses the key human rights issues arising in the context of preventing and countering VERLT in prisons.

A 71-year-old cancer patient died after a Health Board provided her with a “very poor standard of care”, the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales has found. The Ombudsman launched an investigation after receiving a complaint about the care given to Mrs X (anonymised) in December 2019 by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

Nova Scotia Ombudsman William A. Smith said the year 2020-2021 has been "like no other" for his Office, as it adapted to the new normal of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Mr. Smith released his annual report today, June 29, 2021. He said the Ombudsman's office, like other services and businesses "has had to modify its approach to address changing restrictions and evolving needs."

Parliamentary Ombudsman's 2020 Annual Report
Petri Jääskeläinen, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, presented the Parliamentary Ombudsman's Annual Report 2020 to Anu Vehviläinen, Speaker of Parliament, on Thursday 17 June. Like the previous year, a record number of complaints were received in 2020, in total 7,059. This is around 800 (13%) more than in 2019 (6,267).

Provincial Ombudsperson Jay Chalke reappointed for second term
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia today reappointed Jay Chalke as British Columbia’s Ombudsperson for a second six-year term. The appointment followed the unanimous recommendation of the legislature’s Special Committee to Appoint an Ombudsperson.
