Romanian Constitutional Court reinstates People's Advocate
In recent weeks, a lasting crisis concerning the People's Advocate of Romania came to a head. Earlier this year, in May, the Romanian Parliament had taken the unprecedented and legally controversial step to reject the last three annual reports of the People’s Advocate. Subsequently, on 16 June, the Parliament voted to dismiss the incumbent, Ms Renate Weber, for alleged violations of the law. This week, the Romanian Constitutional Court ruled on a challenge to this dismissal and found it to be unconstitutional.

Comparative study about refugees
The comparative study about refugees in Europe, which was conducted by the Ombudsman offices of the Netherlands, Greece and the Basque country, was presented during the IOI World Conference on the topic of "Giving voice to the voiceless". The respective workshop was chaired by the Greek Ombudsman Andreas Pottakis.

Ombudsman sees more data, police and whistleblower complaints
The Office of the Ombudsman’s annual report for 2020 was made public in Parliament on 14 July 2021. During 2020, the office fielded a total of 332 enquiries from members of the public, opened 231 cases for either investigation or informal resolution and resolved 210 cases. By way of comparison, the office opened 30 more cases overall during 2020 than in 2019, despite the pandemic and government lockdown during the second quarter.

On Thursday 8 July 2021, the Western Australian Ombudsman and President of the International Ombudsman Institute released his investigation report "An investigation into the Office of the Public Advocate’s role in notifying the families of Mrs Joyce Savage, Mr Robert Ayling and Mr Kenneth Hartley of the deaths of Mrs Savage, Mr Ayling and Mr Hartley."

Greater transparency needed for Government’s use of machine technology in decision-making
New South Wales (NSW) Ombudsman Paul Miller has called for greater visibility of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other machine technology by NSW Government agencies. In a report tabled in Parliament, the Ombudsman has cautioned agencies that using machine technology in ways that do not accord with standards of lawfulness, transparency, fairness and accountability, could lead to findings of maladministration or potentially unlawful conduct.
