2025-04-25Inspector’s report on Southern Queensland Correctional Centre released
Under the Inspector of Detention Services Act 2022 (IDS Act) the Queensland Ombudsman, Mr Anthony Reilly, is also the Inspector of Detention Services (Inspector). Under the IDS Act, the Inspector must inspect each prison in Queensland every five years and release a report about the inspection. The report makes 37 recommendations for areas of improvement for the women’s prison.

Enthrusted with the National Preventive Mechanism against Torture (NPM), the Spanisch national Ombudsman Institution – the Public Defender – has conducted 231 inspection visits of places of deprivation of liberty during its first working year. The Office of the Public Defender headed by María Luisa Cava de Llano has accordingly published a first MNP Report.

2011-10-07New Director on the I.O.I. Board
A long-standing and valuable member from the African Region left the I.O.I. Board of Directors when Ms Amina Ouédraogo (Burkina Faso) retired from her office as Médiateur du Faso in June 2011. Following a regional I.O.I. meeting Ms Traore, the new Ombudsman in Burkina Faso will fill the vacant position of an African Director on the Board.

2020-12-14EU Ombudsman asks Commission to improve approval process for substances in pesticides
The Ombudsman has made three suggestions to the European Commission to improve the process of approving “active substances” – the components in pesticides that act against specific pests or plant diseases – for use in pesticides. The Ombudsman asked the Commission to approve active substances only for uses that have been confirmed as safe by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA); to publish an explanation of its approvals of active substances in language easily understandable to the public; and to use the confirmatory data procedure with particular restraint.
