2018-05-16IGT announces investigation into use of garnishee notices
On 16 May 2018, the Inspector-General of Taxation (IGT), Mr Ali Noroozi, announced an investigation into the allegations made during the ABC Four Corners program, aired on 9 April 2018, regarding Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO) use of garnishee notices. Garnishee notices are the most common form of firmer action used by the ATO to recover tax debt. Such notices require third parties to pay the money they owe to a taxpayer to the ATO in satisfaction of the tax debt owed by that taxpayer. Accordingly, the cash flow of affected taxpayers may be disrupted with potentially severe impact on vulnerable small businesses and individuals.

2021-01-25Seimas Ombudsman calls for ratification of the Istanbul Convention
An investigation on providing assistance to victims of domestic violence revealed a sad reality: assistance to victims of violence is often still unavailable, those who call the police are still left alone with the perpetrator, and assistance often includes purely formal oral consultations, despite the obvious need for specific assistance. These and other striking conclusions were drawn by the Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas, having summarized the results of the investigation into the provision of assistance to persons, who had experienced domestic violence.

In a recent report Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights (Ombudsman), Maria Stylianou-Lottides, has urged the Justice Ministry to look into speeding up actions to support a transfer request from a member of the LGBTI community to serve out the remainder of their prison term in Nicosia prisons.

Immediately after declaring the State of Emergency in Armenia, the Human Rights Defender has started the monitoring of the situation with regard to domestic violence. Reason for comprehensive monitoring is that the restrictions imposed during the State of Emergency increase the risk of violence in the family. In this respect, women, children and the elderly are the most vulnerable groups.

Since 1 December 2019 British Colombia, Canada, has a new law that gives current and former provincial government employees a way to bring forward concerns about wrongdoing in workplace. The Public Interest Disclosure Act gives the Ombudsperson a new statutory mandate to conduct whistleblowing investigations if employees do not wish to report those concerns internally to their employer.
