    Canadian Council of Parliamentary Ombudsman welcomes Prince Edward Island's first Ombudsperson

    Prince Edward Island’s (PEI) becomes the latest province to appoint an independent officer responsible for ensuring fairness and providing a safe avenue for whistleblower complaints in the public service. Sandy Hermiston will take office as the province’s first Ombudsperson and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner on 14 February 2022. The Canadian Council of Parliamentary Ombudsman (CCPO) warmly welcomes the news.

    Public Defender of Georgia Becomes Member of IOI Board of Directors

    We are pleased to announce that on November 15, 2021, the Public Defender of Georgia, for the first time in the history of the Public Defender’s Office, has started fulfilling the duties of a member of the Board of Directors of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI). The Public Defender’s Office will represent the European region in the Board. The Office was elected a member of the European region in 2019. The Board of Directors oversees the organization's activities and makes decisions about its future activities.

    Public Protector to sign agreement with Gauteng Premier as part of stakeholder roadshow

    The Public Protector South Africa (PPSA) and the Gauteng Provincial Government are set to enter into an agreement aimed at ensuring that requests for investigation-related information, among other things, are responded promptly to expedite investigative processes. Busisiwe Mkhwebane and Premier David Makhura will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the sidelines of a PPSA Stakeholder Roadshow meeting at the City of Tshwane offices in Pretoria on Friday.

    Ombudsperson voice criticism over reception conditions in Kybartai Foreigners’ Registration Centre

    After a visit to Kybartai Foreigners’ Registration Center, the Head of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office, Erika Leonaitė, published an NPM report. The Seimas Ombudsperson concludes that all the conditions applicable to foreigners in Kybartai FRC are equivalent to inhuman or degrading treatment prohibited under the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

    IOI Delegation visits Hungarian-Ukrainian border

    A delegation of the Board of Directors of the European Region of the IOI - International Ombudsman Institute, headed by Regional President and Ombudsman of Greece Andreas Pottakis and Board member and Ombudsman of Slovenia Peter Svetina, visited Hungary on 16 and 17 March.     Austrian Ministry for International Affairs grants IOI status as “international institution”

    As of 1 January 2022, the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) holds a status as “International Institution” in accordance with the Austrian Act on Headquarter Locations (Amtssitzgesetz). With this new status, the IOI will be able to increase its presence as an independent, international organization, the voice of Ombudsman institutions around the world and the authoritative body on Ombudsman matters.
