CHRAJ calls for quick passage of Aged Bill
Joseph Whittal, the Commissioner of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has called for the quick passage of the Aged Bill into law to ensure the effective protection of the rights of the aged. Mr. Whittal made the call in Accra at a Round Table Meeting as part of activities to mark the International Day of Older Persons.

The African Region of the IOI held elections to fill the vacant positions of two African Directors on the IOI Board of Directors as well as the Regional President of IOI Africa. The African Region of the IOI is now full represented by four Directors, as stipulated in the IOI By-laws.

Proportion of Indigenous Women in Federal Custody Nears 50%: Correctional Investigator Issues Statement
Ottawa, December 17, 2021 – Today, the Correctional Investigator, Dr. Ivan Zinger, released new data that shows that the proportion of incarcerated Indigenous women has continued to increase unabated, and is nearing 50% of all federally-sentenced women. On January 21, 2020, the Office of the Correctional Investigator reported that the proportion of Indigenous men and women in federal custody had reached a new historic high, surpassing 30% of the overall incarcerated population. The combined men and women Indigenous proportion in federal corrections is now 32%, and climbing.

On 14 January 2022, Public Protector Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane welcomed Free State Premier Ms. Sisi Ntombela’s handover of the Estina Integrated Dairy Farm project to members of the Vrede community who were meant to benefit from the project when it was first launched in 2013.

International Restorative Justice Week
During this week, the Ararteko wishes to highlight that restorative justice allows both the offender or aggressor and the injured party or victim of any type of crime or conflict to be reintegrated in society as social assets, while engaging society in the rehabilitation and reintegration. Restorative Justice Week is celebrated around the world during the third week of November. The theme of this year's week is Protect and Empower the Person Harmed.

Support for Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman UK
The UK Government has introduced new legislation, which would seriously impact on the powers of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO). On 18 October 2021, the Venice Commission issued an opinion on the possible exclusion of the PHSO as provided for by the Health and Care Bill. The International Ombudsman Institute strongly endorses the Venice Commission’s findings and also issues a statement or support for the UK colleague.

Right to Education of Persons with Disabilities during COVID-19
On November 10, 2021, the Public Defender of Georgia, together with the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI), held an international webinar on the theme: "The right to education of persons with disabilities during COVID-19 pandemic”. Participants spoke about the challenges relating to the exercise of the right to education of persons with disabilities during the pandemic and exchanged views, methodological experiences and best practices on high quality inclusive education.

On the sidelines of the 9th Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, Dr. Muhannad Hijazi, JIACC’s Chairman met with Hassan Abdel Shafi Ahmed, Administrative Control Authority’s Chairman, to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on mutual cooperation against corruption and its preventive measures.

City of Penticton agrees to compensate vulnerable woman after house sold in municipal tax sale
Victoria – In the wake of an investigation into a municipal tax sale which resulted in a vulnerable 60-year-old woman losing her home, the City of Penticton has today agreed to compensate the former property owner as recommended by the Ombudsperson.

Ombudsman publishes Guide of Prisoner’s First Contact
The Commissioner for Administration and the Protection of Human Rights (Ombudsman) published a Guide of Prisoner’s First Contact in English and in Greek. This publication was prepared by the Ombudsman in cooperation with lawyers of the Association of the Protection of the Rights of Prisoners & Ex-Prisoners and it takes in consideration the real experiences gained from persons who remained in custody either as detainees pending trial or convicts in the Central Prisons of the Republic of Cyprus.

Consultation on protection of human rights during peaceful protests in crisis situations
We are pleased to inform you about a global consultation conducted by the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Clément Voule, in partnership with the Global Alliance of NHRIs (GANHRI). This consultation presents an opportunity for NHRIs to provide inputs for a report which the Special Rapporteur is preparing on the protection of human rights in the context of peaceful protests during crisis situations. The report will be presented to the 50th session of the Human Rights Council.
