On 1 December 2021, the Office of the Ombudsman of Israel, in association with the IOI and AOM, hosted an international online conference on the theme "Protecting the Rights of Older People in an Age of Longevity", in celebration of the Israel Ombudsman's jubilee year. IOI Delegation visits Hungarian-Ukrainian border
A delegation of the Board of Directors of the European Region of the IOI - International Ombudsman Institute, headed by Regional President and Ombudsman of Greece Andreas Pottakis and Board member and Ombudsman of Slovenia Peter Svetina, visited Hungary on 16 and 17 March. They met with their host, Commissioner for Fundamental Rights of Hungary Ákos Kozma, in Budapest on 16 March.

Ombudsman Saskatchewan publishes 2021 Annual Report
Ombudsman and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner, Mary McFadyen’s 2021 annual reports were tabled in the Saskatchewan Legislature today – the last ones before she retires on May 6, 2022. McFadyen said long-term care was an important theme this year, as it was throughout her time as Ombudsman.

Austrian Ministry for International Affairs grants IOI status as “international institution”
As of 1 January 2022, the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) holds a status as “International Institution” in accordance with the Austrian Act on Headquarter Locations (Amtssitzgesetz). With this new status, the IOI will be able to increase its presence as an independent, international organization, the voice of Ombudsman institutions around the world and the authoritative body on Ombudsman matters.

European Ombudsman asks Frontex to improve its accountability
The Ombudsman has asked Frontex to improve its accountability after conducting a strategic inquiry into how it complies with its fundamental rights obligations under its expanded mandate. The inquiry examined the transparency of Frontex’s joint operations with national authorities at the EU’s borders, how it identifies fundamental rights concerns, and how it monitors the return of people seeking asylum.

Ombudsman publishes English version of Annual Report and NPM Report for 2020
The Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia is happy to announce that the Annual Report for 2020 and the Report on Implementation of the Tasks of the National Preventive Mechanism under the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment for 2020, are now available also in English language.

On 3 December 2021, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, elections were held at the annual meeting of the European Network of the Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI), and the Latvian Ombudsman was elected to the GANHRI Working Group on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Control Yuan passes draft amendments to Provision of Control Act
On 12 October 2021, the Control Yuan passed the Draft Amendments to the Control Act, adding a special section to Chapter 5-1, “Exercise of the Powers and Functions of the National Human Rights Commission,” by enacting a special law, sending it to the Legislative Yuan for consideration on the same day.

Adele Squillaci elected as new Ombudsman of Valle d’Aosta
On 1 February 2022, Ms Adele Squillaci took office as the new Ombudsman of the Valle d'Aosta. Ms Squillaci was elected by the Regional Assembly at its meeting of 12 January 2022 for a five year term. She succeeds Ombudsman Enrico Formento Dojot.

March 24, 2022 is Whistleblower Awareness Day. It’s a day for recognizing how difficult and yet how important it is to speak up if you are concerned about a possible wrongdoing in your workplace. Saskatchewan’s Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner, Mary McFadyen said, “I want to acknowledge the role of whistleblowers, particularly in the public sector, for having the courage to speak up if they think something is seriously wrong at work.”

Recommendations on complaint about car damage due to sea water flooding not implemented
In terms of Article 22(4) of the Ombudsman Act, the Ombudsman Mr Anthony C. Mifsud and the Commissioner for Environment and Planning, Perit Alan Saliba, have sent to the House of Representatives the Final Opinion in relation to a complaint on car damages suffered due to sea water flooding at Birżebbuġa.
