There are a number of reasons for protecting whistleblowers; first and foremost to ensure the proper functioning of the public systems acting for the benefit of the public. The next publication in the series of IOI Best Practice Papers was developed by the Office of the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel and is based on the immense experience acquired by the Office.

The Public Defender summarises his work in 2023 in the annual report
Stanislav Křeček and Vít Alexander Schorm have presented the Annual Report of their office for the year 2023. They welcomed the fact that ministries and authorities had successfully used the Ombudsman’s findings to correct maladministration in individual cases and to change inappropriate practices. On the other hand, they also drew attention to some topics that remained open, such as the transformation of large institutions for people with disabilities and, above all, the upcoming establishment of a children’s ombudsman.

Defensoría del Pueblo: al cierre de mayo cifra de mujeres desaparecidas supera a la reportada en igual periodo de 2023
La Defensoría del Pueblo dio a conocer el reporte “Qué pasó con ellas” correspondiente al mes de mayo de 2024, en el que se revela un aumento de las cifras de alertas de mujeres desaparecidas respecto al mismo periodo del año anterior. En efecto, al cierre del quinto mes de este año puede evidenciarse un total de 2695 casos acumulados, lo que representa un aumento del 10 % en comparación al periodo comprendido entre enero y mayo de 2023, en que se reportaron 2445 alertas.

2nd Italian Edition of the International Ombudsman Conference
The 2nd Italian Edition of the International Ombudsman Conference will be held on 12-13 September 2024, in Cassino (Italy). This event, strongly supported by Marino Fardelli, President of the National Coordination of Italian Civic Defenders and Civic Defender of the Lazio Region, as well as a member of the IOI Europe Board, represents an important opportunity for discussion and exchange of experiences.

NPM Workshop in Oslo
The IOI is pleased to continue the successful training series for Ombudsman with NPM mandate. The next NPM training will be hosted by the Office of the Parliamentary Ombud of Norway and held in Oslo from 9 – 11 February 2026. It will be delivered by the APT and deal with preventive monitoring in mental health institutions, as well as creating change for NPMs who have been monitoring for years.

PCC embarks on nationwide intensive training for staff in all its 36 state offices
In a bid to enhance staff capabilities and align with international best practices, the Public Complaints Commission has commenced a nationwide training program for all its staff nationwide. The training, which began on the 13th of May, 2024, saw enthusiastic participation from employees at levels 8 to 15, with staff from all 36 states converging at their respective state offices.

The Commission Commends Nuclear Power and Energy Agency for Information Disclosures, Public Engagement on Nuclear Power Plant in Uyombo
The Commission on Administrative Justice (Ombudsman) on its own motion requested information from the agency following media reports on concerns raised by some residents of the Uyombo Community regarding the ecological, safety, and security impact of the proposed nuclear plant to the community.
