On 17 August 2023, the Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, announced at a press conference the completion of a direct investigation into the Government’s enforcement against defective sewage works of New Territories Exempted Houses (“NTEHs”) and made 10 recommendations for improvement to the Environmental Protection Department (“EPD”), the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (“FEHD”) and the Lands Department (“LandsD”).

The Greek Ombudsman publishes a special report on harassment and sexual harassment at work
The report published by the Greek Ombudsman is a brief record of the findings from the cases handled by the Authority in the period 2011-2022 concerning harassment and sexual harassment in employment and at work. It offers the reader a broad overview of the institutional framework, on the national, European and international level, for the prevention and investigation of harassment and sexual harassment, as well as the imposition of effective, proportionate and dissuasive sanctions.

Orientation scolaire : un droit souvent entravé, des choix trop souvent subis
Dans un rapport qu’elle rend public le 3 juin 2025 "Le droit à l’orientation dans l’enseignement secondaire : un droit à déployer pour tous les jeunes", la Défenseure des droits alerte sur les failles d’un système d’orientation dans l’enseignement secondaire peu lisible, morcelé et inégalitaire, alors même qu’il engage l’avenir de millions de jeunes. Elle appelle à une prise de conscience collective pour faire de l’orientation un véritable levier d’émancipation, de choix et de prise en compte de la parole des jeunes.

Ombudsman concludes Round Table Conference on the Impact of AI in the Labour Market
The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon, delivered the concluding remarks at the round table conference “The Ripple Effect of AI in the Labour Market” held in Valletta. The event was organised by the Malta Chamber of Commerce, the General Workers Union, and the Malta Business Bureau as part of the EU-funded TransFormWork II project, which aims to promote a just transition toward the work of the future through better and more effective regulation of artificial intelligence.

Rapport spécial sur le Directeur de l’état civil
Le protecteur du citoyen, M. Marc-André Dowd, a rendu public le 4 juin 2025 un rapport d’enquête intitulé Directeur de l’état civil – Accélérer la transmission des certificats de décès, par respect pour les citoyens. Le Protecteur du citoyen recommande des actions durables pour garantir des délais acceptables dans la transmission des certificats de décès.

The IOI introduced a publication series of Best Practice Papers (BPPs) with a view to providing guidance material for strong and independent Ombudsman institutions. Revised versions of two papers of this publication series, namely the BPP on ‘Developing and Reforming Ombudsman Institutions’ and the BPP on ‘Dealing with challenging behaviour’ are now available on the IOI Website.

The Office of the Ombudsperson for Children invites Ombudsman and Mediator Institutions affiliated with the International Ombudsman Institute to participate in a 2-day Workshop on the theme “The role of Ombudsman and Mediators in monitoring the situation of children in conflict with the law and deprived of their liberty” to be held in the Republic of Mauritius on 5 and 6 September 2023. The Ombudsman submits to Parliament a legislative proposal on the criminalisation of acts against human dignity
Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva submits to the National Assembly a legislative proposal for the criminalisation in the Criminal Code (CrC) of offences involving the intentional infliction of physical or mental pain or suffering that degrades human dignity. She announced this on 1 August 2023, in the programme “This Morning” on bTV in connection with the Stara Zagora case, where an 18-year-old girl was cut with a dummy knife by a man and as a result of the 24 injuries inflicted she received 400 stitches.

La Defensoría del Pueblo informa de que las alertas por mujeres desaparecidas reportan incremento en el primer semestre de 2023
La Defensoría del Pueblo informó que, en el primer semestre del 2023, la cifra de notas alertas por mujeres desaparecidas registradas por la Policía Nacional reportó un incremento superior a 200 casos con respecto al mismo periodo del año pasado. En efecto, en los seis primeros meses de este año se registraron 2889 notas de alerta, que evidencian un incremento en relación a la cifra de 2633 notas reportadas entre enero y junio de 2022.

Malawi Ombudsman staff take the Oath of Secrecy
On 7 August 2023, the Office of the Ombudsman administered the Oath of Secrecy to 40 of its members of staff and interns. The Director of Legal Services and Advisory, Chipiliro Mangulama, said the ceremony is in line with Section 10 of The Ombudsman Act, which stipulates the need for officers in the office of the Ombudsman to treat with utmost confidentiality any information made available to them in the course of their work.
