Ombudsman attends symposium of Justice and Accountability Programme
The Office of the Ombudsman attended the closing symposium of the 5 year Justice and Accountability Programme called Chilungamo at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe. Through this program, the office received funding to implement seven main activities which were packaged into four strategic areas of resolution of backlog of cases, public awareness, stakeholder engagement and capacity building.

Ombudsman issues guide for care providers on good record keeping
The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman issued a guide to help care providers learn from its complaints involving record keeping. The new guide focuses on a number of case studies highlighting the common issues the Ombudsman sees, and also includes good practice tips to help providers avoid the problems from occurring in their own settings.

Next Best Practice Paper deals with mediation as an effective tool in complaint investigation
The mediation process is a tool that enables personal interaction and respectful and direct dialogue for promoting dispute resolution. It has existed in many countries for several decades as an alternative to the classic complaint handling procedure. Issue 8 of the IOI’s Best Practice Paper series was developed by the Ombudsman and State Comptroller of Israel and draws on the office’s vast experience in this field.

Amalgamation grants paid in full after Ombudsman Commission intervention
The Divine Word University (DWU) received its full amalgamation grants from the National Government after a mediation between the Ombudsman Commission, the DWU University Council and the Department of Higher Education Research Science and Technology. The mediation was mainly to address a planned fee increase by the University and to find ways the University can explore to avoid passing the costs to the parents. Chief Ombudsman Richard Pagen led the mediation.

New mobile outreach program serves people in villages
The Office of the Ombudsman of Tonga introduced a new initiative to better facilitate easier public access to the services of the Ombudsman. Six mobile outreach programs (MOPs) covered the smaller villages of Tongatapu not commonly present in previous district outreaches.
