NPMs of German-speaking countries exchange experience at annual meeting
From 10 - 11 November 2022 the annual meeting of German-speaking National Preventive Mechanisms (NPM) took place at the Austrian Ombudsman Board in Vienna. For the first time, representatives of the NPM from Luxembourg and the Principality of Liechtenstein took part in this exchange as well.

Alberta Ombudsman and Public Interest Commissioner welcomed distinguished guests from Nigeria
The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions of the Republic of Nigeria paid an official visit to the Alberta Legislative Assembly and the office of the Alberta Ombudsman. The one-week visit was initiated by the Chairman of the Senate Committee, and leader of the delegation, Senator (Dr.) Patrick Ayo Akinyelure, with a view to fostering relations and collaboration.

BC Ombudsperson investigation highlights Vital Statistics Agency’s overly rigid decision-making resulting in improper discrimination of a senior
The Ombudsperson released a report with a cautionary message for public organizations – don’t develop policies that are too narrow to serve the public fairly. In his report, Making Amends, Ombudsperson Jay Chalke highlights the case of a woman in her 70s who ran into bureaucratic roadblocks when she applied to the Vital Statistics Agency to amend her name on her B.C. birth certificate.

Committee on Social Welfare and Environment Hygiene Affairs focus on occupational safety, health and vocational training for people with disabilities
Control Yuan President Chen Chu accompanied Social Welfare and Environment Hygiene Affairs Convener Su Li-Chiung and a group of Control Yuan Members to conduct a circuit supervision of the Southern Occupational Safety and Health Center (part of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Ministry of Labor) and the Kaohsiung City Government Labor Bureau Bo-Ai Vocational Training Center. The delegation also visited the ASE Group to promote workplace safety, vocational training for people with disabilities, and the operation of sheltered workshops for people with disabilities.

Poldershop: Ombudsman standards future-proof?
Ombudsman institutes take action against maladministration affecting the citizens of their respective country. But what are the standards against which Ombudsman measure the performance of government and why are these standards used? Are these standards future-proof considering the challenges our societies face now and in the near future and the role of the Ombudsman therein? Or are there possibilities for improvement? This was discussed in a Poldershop organized by the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands on 25 October 2022.

World’s first official international Ombudsman review finds UK service is robust and good value
The first ever peer review undertaken under the auspices of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) finds that the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) delivers an “efficient, enhanced and effective modern service” and provides significant value for stakeholders. It has become a much stronger organisation since a previous independent peer review in 2018.

Ombudsman welcomes enhanced ability to oversee children in care system
Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier welcomes the enhanced children in care oversight role for his Office. The Act passed its Third Reading in Parliament in August and it will come into effect on 1 July 2023. The Act gives the Chief Ombudsman a greater ability to consider complaints and monitor and investigate systemic issues in this area.

ACRC shared Korea's Best Practices of Anti-Corruption Policies with 7 Countries in Asia-Pacific and Africa
A training course sharing Korea’s best practices of anti-corruption policies, such as Integrity Assessment of public institutions and Corruption Risk Assessment, with 7 countries was completed. The ACRC designed the training course, which marks its 10th anniversary this year, for foreign countries to build capacity for the effective establishment of anti-corruption systems.

NSW Ombudsman Annual Report and summary of investigations report tabled in Parliament
The NSW Ombudsman’s Office Annual Report: 2021-22 has been tabled in Parliament. The report provides insight to the 24,874 contacts received by the office in the financial year to 30 June 2022. These included 12,363 actionable complaints, which highlight the diversity of issues raised by NSW citizens accessing services from NSW Government agencies, local councils and certain community-service providers.
