Ombudsman Hong Kong hosted 21st Presentation Ceremony of the Ombudsman’s Awards
The Ombudsman of Hong Kong, Ms Connie Lau, hosted the 21st Presentation Ceremony of The Ombudsman’s Awards on 11 October 2017. At the Ceremony, she encouraged tripartite co-operation among the Office of the Ombudsman, members of the public and organisations under complaint to bring about further enhancement in the quality and efficiency of public administration through the lodging and handling of complaints.

Violations against persons with a mental disorder considered in a special report
At a press conference held at the premises of the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia on Tuesday, 5 September 2017, Human Rights Ombudsman Vlasta Nussdorfer and Deputy Ombudsman Ivan Šelih presented a special report, which the Ombudsman had sent to the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia the previous day. The report considers the issue of overcrowded secure wards in social care institutions (particularly special social care institutions) and difficulties faced by persons with a mental disorder in these wards, drawing attention to violations of their right to personal dignity.

Capacity-building workshop on human rights in the digital age
The IOI capacity-building workshop on “Human Rights in the Digital Age” will be held in Tallinn (Estonia) from 23 – 24 January 2018. The workshop will explore contemporary challenges in digital society and the Ombudsman’s role in protecting human rights in this digital age. Registration is now open!

Annual Report of the Information Commissioner and Commissioner for Environmental Inforamtion
30,417 requests under the Freedom of Information Act were made to public bodies in 2016. This was the highest number of FOI requests ever recorded. The number of applications made to the Information Commissioner to review FOI decisions rose by 32% in the same year.

Hearing of the Commission for Fundamental Rights at the Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly
The Judiciary Committee supported, with ten yes votes and two abstentions, that the National Assembly put the report on the activities of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights in 2016 on the agenda of its plenary meeting.

The Office of the Inspector-General of Taxation (IGT) launched a newletter called IGoT News!. The first edition was issued on 6 July 2017. IGoT News! will regularly inform its readers of the activities of the IGT and what it is hearing from the community, particularly from its complaint handling service.
