Sustainability of Victoria’s child protection system put at risk by treatment of kinship carers
The Victorian Ombudsman has tabled an investigation into the financial support provided to kinship carers, finding that the Department of Health and Human Services failed to act in the best interests of some of Victoria's most disadvantaged children by neglecting kinship carers. Tabling her report in the Victorian Parliament today, Ombudsman Deborah Glass said her investigation has exposed “an alarming weakness in our child protection system”.

Essay Contest 2015 of the Forum of Canadian Ombudsman (FCO)
In recognition of the fiftieth (50th) anniversary of the establishment of the first Ombudsman role in Canada in 1965, FCO is providing a bursary for the cost of enrolment in the FCO/Osgoode ‘Ombuds Essentials’ course offered in English from September 28 – October 2, 2015 in Toronto or in French in Montreal in May, 2016 (2015 Registration fee: $3150 + 409.50 = $3559.50).

Concern about routine strip searching and high incidence of force and restraint in women’s prison
Female prisoners in Victoria’s main women’s prison are being routinely strip searched, in what Ombudsman Deborah Glass has described as a “humiliating, degrading and undignified practice”. Tabling the Implementing OPCAT in Victoria: report and inspection of the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Victorian Parliament, Ms Glass said an independent inspection had uncovered some serious issues.

Ombudsman rules complaint of marketplace vendors against removal of kiosks founded
The Ombudsman considered a complaint filed by a group of thirty Marketplace Vendors founded and ruled that the standards of Reason, Active and adequate information provision, and Reasonableness and proportionality have been violated. The vendors had informed the Ombudsman that they were negatively affected by the decision of the Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunication (Minister TEATT) to breakdown and remove all Kiosks in Philipsburg.
