Public Defender’s 9th Special Report on Equality
On April 22, 2024, the Public Defender of Georgia presented the 9th annual report on the situation of equality. The report provides an overview of the obstacles faced by women, persons with disabilities, representatives of religious and ethnic minorities, members of the LGBTIQ+ community and other vulnerable groups in terms of the realization of the right to equality in various fields during 2023. The report also provides information about the activities carried out and decisions made by the Public Defender of Georgia for the protection of the right to equality.

Meeting of Public Defender’s Consultative Council for Monitoring Promotion, Protection and Implementation of CRPD

Alberta Ombudsman finds inadequate Regulation impacts benefit access for people with developmental disabilities
The Alberta Ombudsman has released a public report on his investigation into the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program which found systemic issues in how the program assesses intellectual capacity. The investigation, initiated by a complaint from a mother advocating for her son, sheds light on legislative flaws in the program’s eligibility criteria and decision-making process.

Public Complaints Commission and Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund collaborate on public awareness campaign
On 23 April 2024, the Federal Capital Territory’s Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission, Comrade Dalhatu Ezekiel Musa, met with the Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, Mrs. Maureen Allagoa, in her office in Abuja. They both agreed on the importance of a joint public awareness campaign to ensure that employees and employers alike are informed about the protections and obligations defined under current social insurance laws. They also discussed implementing joint initiatives to enhance accessibility of their services to the public.

Yukon Ombudsman calls to modernize Act
Yukon Ombudsman Jason Pedlar has requested amendments to the Ombudsman Act that give him the same authority found in the majority of Canadian jurisdictions and align it with international best practices. Pedlar has submitted a report to the Yukon Legislative Assembly with proposed changes to the Ombudsman Act, to better protect Yukoners.

PCC embarks on nationwide intensive training for staff in all its 36 state offices
In a bid to enhance staff capabilities and align with international best practices, the Public Complaints Commission has commenced a nationwide training program for all its staff nationwide. The training, which began on the 13th of May, 2024, saw enthusiastic participation from employees at levels 8 to 15, with staff from all 36 states converging at their respective state offices.
