OHCHR Investigation contributes to reconciliation and justice development in Sri Lanka
The Investigation Report issued by the Office of the United Nation’s High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) dated 16th September 2015, is the most comprehensive report on human rights issued by any international or national agency to date. It is comprehensive and balanced. If implemented it could lead to considerable positive developments in Sri Lanka. This 261 page report sums up some of the most serious problems relating to the rule of law and the administration of justice that have arisen over a considerable period of time.

Investigation into the management of maintenance claims against public housing tenant
As a result of a number of complaints to the Ombudsman and wider community concern, the Ombudsman conducted an investigation into the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Housing's processes for determining and pursuing maintenance debts against public housing tenants. The investigation found that many public housing tenants were charged thousands of dollars for the repair of damaged public housing, even when there was no evidence they caused the damage. The investigation also found that the department was wasting public resources and breaching its responsibility as a Model Litigant by making unreasonable demands for cost recovery and pursing claims to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Violence against women undermines women’s core fundamental rights such as dignity, access to justice and gender equality. For example, one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15; one in five women has experienced stalking; every second woman has been confronted with one or more forms of sexual harassment.

MDAC research on access to justice for children with mental disabilities
The Mental Disability Advocacy Center (MDAC), an international human rights organisation based in Budapest, recently completed a 2-year European multi-country research project on access to justice for children with mental disabilities. The project was designed to strengthen access to justice and legal remedies for children with intellectual or psycho-disabilities who have been victims of human rights violations. In many parts of the EU, civil society is under threat, finds a new report by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). Given the vital role civil society plays in upholding democratic processes and in promoting human rights, decision makers need to ensure the important work of civil society is not undermined through policy and legal changes and funding cuts.

Adam Bodnar attended meeting of the Ombudspersons of the Visegrad Group countries
In the Czech city of Brno, an annual V4 meeting was held of ombudspersons from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. In the adopted declaration "Human Rights for Everyone", the Visegrad Group ombudspersons emphasized their common goals and values, as well as the significance of the institution of ombudsman maintaining independence of the authorities. Thanks to such independence, the ombudspersons may support ordinary people in their conflicts with the state.
