Corruption perception results: NZ must be more open, says Chief Ombudsman
The Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier says New Zealand must be even more open and direct if it is to improve its ranking as one of the least corrupt countries in the world. The just-released 2023 Transparency International Corruption Perception Index shows New Zealand has slipped to 3rd place on 85 points, after being ranked 2nd equal with Finland on 87 points in 2022.

Ombudsman saves Toronto man $20,000 in Hydro dispute
Toronto Ombudsman Kwame Addo says Toronto Hydro acted unfairly by holding a property owner responsible for approximately $20,000 worth of repairs to a hydro vault it never told him he owned. Ombudsman Addo launched the investigation after receiving a complaint from Mr. A., who purchased a unit in a Toronto plaza in 1980.

A learning initiative to help Ombudsman officers across Europe deliver quality services to the citizen was launched on 16 January 2024 in Manchester, UK. The Learning Academy of the European Chapter of the International Ombudsman Institute will serve as a specialized forum and training center where Ombudsmen and their officers will exchange ideas and practices, and develop new skills and modes of cooperation.

Malawi Parliament passes Ombudsman (Amendment) Bill
On 7 December 2023, the Malawi Parliament passed the Ombudsman (Amendment) Bill 2023 after close to one and half hours of scrutiny. This bill seeks to amend the Ombudsman Act (Cap. 3:07) in order to clarify and strengthen the legal framework of the jurisdiction and mandate of the Ombudsman.

L’ombudsman de Montréal, Me Nadine Mailloux, a déposé le 17 juin 2024 au conseil municipal son rapport d’activités pour l’année 2023. Ce 20e rapport annuel du Bureau fait état de 2 223 dossiers traités, incluant 215 nouvelles enquêtes sur des sujets très variés, dont 47 lancées à l’initiative de l’OdM. After successfully conducting the first phase of awareness campaign under the IOI regional subsidy project, the IOI General Secretariat has extended the said project further under the IOI regional subsidy project and granted a subsidy grant worth 2,667/-€. A detailed plan of different activities was prepared for the proper utilization of this grant/amount.

BC independent oversight offices urge public consultation, legislative reform on use of artificial intelligence
Three oversight Officers of the Legislature are urging the BC government to expand its consultation on draft principles for the responsible use of artificial intelligence to members of the public in a letter to Minister of Citizens’ Services Lisa Beare. The ministry’s consultation is currently restricted to employees of the BC public service. The officers are also calling on government to ensure clear legislation is in place to protect the interest of British Columbians when AI is used.
