New South Wales Ombudsman reports on the need of a boarding house reform
On 16 August 2011, the NSW Ombudsman tabled a special report to Parliament titled More than board and lodging: the need for boarding house reform. The report draws on extensive work by the Ombudsman´s office since 2002, which has identified serious concerns about the safety, health, welfare and rights of the residents of licensed boarding houses, and the adequacy of the system that is meant to protect them.

Public Defender publishes first report on NPM activities
Enthrusted with the National Preventive Mechanism against Torture (NPM), the Spanisch national Ombudsman Institution – the Public Defender – has conducted 231 inspection visits of places of deprivation of liberty during its first working year. On 28 January 2011, the Croatian Parliament adopted the Law on the Preventive Mechanism for Suppression of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment and Punishment, by which the Republic of Croatia has fulfilled its obligation after signing the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment and Punishment (OPCAT).

Parliamentary Ombudsman launches public consultation on direct access
On 14 June, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Ann Abraham, who investigates complaints about government bodies that have not been resolved elsewhere, has launched a public consultation on whether complainants should have direct access to her service. Currently, members of the public need a referral from a Member of Parliament (MP) in order to bring their complaint to the Parliamentary Ombudsman.
