Commissioner for Human Rights discovers alarming case during preventive visit
Polish Commissioner for Human Rights discovered alarming case of deprivation of liberty in psychiatric facility during one of his preventive visits. A citizen was placed in the mental hospital for stealing a bike. This happened 10 years ago by a court decision that was based on the opinion of a psychologist who had not even examined the patient.

A high-level conference on the topic of “Impacts of artificial intelligence development on human rights, democracy and the rule of law” was held from February 26-27, 2019, in Helsinki, Finland. The conference was organized by the Finnish government and Council of Europe (CoE) within the framework of the Finnish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers.

Review of school leaving examinations will become more transparent
In recent years, the Czech Ombudsman repeatedly warned about shortcomings in the procedure of the Ministry of Education (hereinafter “the Ministry”) in reviewing the results of school-leaving examinations (the “maturita” exam used in numerous types of secondary schools). Based on the Ombudsman’s comments, the Ministry has amended the so-called “maturita decree” and modified certain procedures and forms so that the students would now have better information on where and how to lodge a complaint.

The Public Protector welcomes the Eastern Cape High Court’s dismissal on Thursday, March 08, 2019 of an application by provincial government Director-General, Ms. Marion Mbina-Mthembu, to have Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s findings on the plundering of public resources in the name of the funeral and memorial services of the late former President, Nelson Mandela, reviewed and set aside.

Condena Ombudsperson mexicano altos niveles de violencia contra las mujeres
Al participar en la Reunión Anual de GANHRI, Luis Raúl González Pérez, Ombudsperson mexicano, condenó los altos niveles de violencia contra las mujeres y convocó a sus homólogos a cuidar en cada país el cumplimiento de los mecanismos de defensa. Luis Raúl González Pérez aseguró que los principales retos para contrarrestar la violencia contra la mujer, siguen siendo las políticas públicas, la voluntad política de los gobiernos y los presupuestos.
