Toronto’s Ombudsman reports on first year of office’s new Housing Unit, underscores human right to housing
On 19 July 2024, Toronto’s Ombudsman Kwame Addo released an update on the work his office’s new Housing Unit has done during its first year of operation. Established in July of 2023, the Housing Unit at Ombudsman Toronto investigates and reviews the planning and delivery of the City of Toronto’s housing services, policies, and programs to make sure they are fair and uphold Torontonians’ human right to adequate housing.

The IOI Board of Directors decided at their Board meeting held in The Hague in May 2024 to continue the regional subsidy programme for the membership year 2024/2025. Members wishing to apply for regional subsidies are invited to submit project proposals until 5 August 2024.

Parliamentary Ombudsman submitted Annual Report 2023 to Speaker of Parliament
On 25 June 2024, Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen submitted his Annual Report 2023 to Speaker of Parliament Jussi Halla-aho. In 2023, there were a total of 7,124 complaints (6,613 in 2022). This is just over 500 (7.7%) more than the previous year. The largest number of complaints concerned social welfare 1,136 (997), the police 855 (821), healthcare 803 (751) and criminal sanctions 591 (672). In the reporting year, 6,876 complaints were resolved. The corresponding figure in 2022 was 6,857.

Access to justice for asylum seekers and refugees: a call for help from IOI members
The Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) is delighted to announce the launch of a collaborative research project examining the role of ombudspersons in the protection of refugees and asylum seekers (the OPRAS project). Celebrating 15 Years of Fairness, Looking Forward
Toronto’s Ombudsman says 2024 marks 15 years of success for his office in solving problems with City services for the people of Toronto. In his annual report released on 21 June 2024, Ombudsman Kwame Addo notes that to date, the office has handled more than 31,000 individual complaints from members of the public.
