Involuntary hospitalized people will be able to benefit from an independent assessment of their mental health status
Involuntary hospitalized persons with mental and behavioral disorders from now on will be able to take advantage of an independent assessment of their state of mental health. Such a possibility is provided for in the Minister of Health’s procedure, which was approved taking into account the recommendations of the Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas.

Ombudsman of Hong Kong presented 2018-19 Annual Report to the public
The Hong Kong Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, presented to the public today (25 July) the 2018-19 Annual Report of the Office of The Ombudsman. The Office of The Ombudsman (the Office) received 4,991 complaints in 2018-19, slightly higher than the previous year’s figure. Among the complaints received, 205 were concluded by way of full investigation, of which 58 (28.3%) were substantiated or partially substantiated, similar to previous year’s figure of 26.2%.

Ontario Ombudsman to investigate government’s oversight of long-term care homes during pandemic
Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé launched an investigation into the oversight of long-term care homes by the province’s Ministry of Long-Term Care and Ministry of Health during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The investigation will focus on whether the oversight of long-term care homes by those ministries during the coronavirus crisis is adequate to ensure the safety of residents and staff.

Victorian Parliament referred new investigation to Ombudsman
Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass has received a letter from the Legislative Assembly of the Victorian Parliament referring a matter for investigation and report under section 16 of the Ombudsman Act 1973. The referral requires THE Ombudsman to investigate matters concerning invoices current and former Liberal and Nationals MPs certified for payment by the Department of Parliamentary Services.

David Baele appointed as new President of Ombudsman.be
The Board of Directors of Ombudsman.be has appointed Federal Ombudsman David Baele as the new President of the Belgian Network of Ombudsmen. He succeeds Marc Bertrand. The network will continue to strengthen cooperation and make ombudsman services even more accessible to citizens and businesses, helping them more easily to find the right ombudsman when facing issues with public services or companies.

Man overcharged for hospital stay complains to Ombudsman
A man complained to Ombudsman Peter Tyndall after he was charged 1,500€ for a number of hospital stays. This was despite a cap of 750€ on such charges at the time. The man, who suffers from a severe kidney condition, was admitted to two different hospitals over 12 months. He spent a total of 30 nights in hospital. At the time there was a 75€ per day charge for a hospital stay.

The shocking story of the experience of a person who crossed the border of Lithuania reached the Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas: “I was detained while trying to obtain asylum and did not get an explanation for what reasons my freedom was restricted”. According to the person, the compulsory isolation procedure was more reminiscent of detention, since he was not provided with information in the language he could understand and his requests to isolate in a chosen place of residence were not taken into account.

The Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, Mr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput, inaugurated the one-of-its-kind Climate & Disaster Justice Unit, a pioneering initiative to ensure expeditious and justifiable redressal of complaints stemming from climate-related and man-made disasters. The Unit will be a fast-paced mechanism resolving issues of delay, corruption, or neglect in relief, rehabilitation and public service delivery. It will be working on safeguarding vulnerable groups, inclusive governance, and coordination with UN agencies, NGOs, and civil society.

Victorian Ombudsman to conduct OPCAT-style inspection
The Victorian Ombudsman will inspect the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in July 2017.
