2018-05-15Ombudsman for the Armed Forces signs Time to Change pledge
In a demonstration of her commitment to making the OSCO a supportive work environment, Nicola Williams, the Service Complaints Ombudsman for the Armed Forces signed the Time to Change pledge this afternoon. In doing so, the OSCO has joined the ranks of over 700 employers in England who have signed the pledge. Time to Change is a campaign that aims to change the way we talk and think about mental health in order to remove the stigma and end discrimination.

2018-04-04Forum for the creation of an NPM database at the Austrian Ombudsman Board
On 27 and 28 March 2018, the Council of Europe, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) and the Austrian Ombudsman Board organized a forum with representatives from NPMs of six European countries and international and European experts. The topic was the possible creation of a databank for the exchange of national standards in places of detention and NPM recommendations.

The new Ombudsman Act 2017 commenced on 31 January 2018. The coming into effect of this new Act means that any person who is unhappy about how any government office deals with them, can complain to the Ombudsman. Furthermore, the Ombudsman is empowered by this new Act to not only investigate appropriate complaints that it received but can also initiate investigations on its own from information received from any other source including the media.

2018-04-26Complaints to Toronto Ombudsman up in 2017
City of Toronto Ombudsman Susan Opler released the institution's 2017 Annual Report. She says that in 2017, her office handled nearly 1650 complaints about City services, up 7% from the year before. Poor communication continues to be a factor in many complaints her office receives. Ombudsman Toronto published nine reports in 2017, making 65 recommendations that improved fairness in how the City of Toronto serves people.

Possibly the most important element to the success of an Ombudsman is the office’s independence. It must not be, or be seen to be, answerable to the government of the day or to the agencies within the office’s jurisdiction. At the same time, the office must also not be or be seen to be a community advocate. The Ombudsman must clearly be acting in the public interest at all times.
