The Control Yuan (CY) carried out an investigation after receiving a complaint by a citizen claiming he was being deprived of his right to work by being prohibited for life from holding a taxi driver’s license due to a conviction for attempted murder, despite having already served his prison sentence. The right to work is the right of each citizen to earn a living to survive and should be protected by the government.

2011-01-17SYT II Training in Vienna in June 2011 - now open for registration
Following the successful first I.O.I. edition of the “Sharpening Your Teeth”-Training that was attended by 38 participants from 17 different states, the I.O.I. is organising a second SYT training which will be held from 5 to 8 June 2011 at the I.O.I. General Secretariat in Vienna, Austria. This three-day training on systemic investigations for staff members of Ombudsman institutions is based on the format “Sharpening Your Teeth” that was successfully invented by the Ontario Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman for Bermuda, Ms Victoria Pearman, has been elected to represent the Caribbean and Latin America as Caribbean Director of the IOI. She will serve as Regional President for the IOI’s Caribbean & Latin American Region. In this role, she will participate in meetings of the IOI Executive Committee and work closely with the two Directors for Latin America to manage regional matters and coordinate activities.

On 11 November 2010 the United Nations General Assembly’s third commission adopted a resolution on "The role of the Ombudsman, mediator and other national human rights institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights".
