    Discrimination against women candidates based on the minimum height requirement for admission to Police Academy

    The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in case C-409/16, which was recently published, was asked to reply to a request for a preliminary ruling addressed to it by the Greek Council of the State, regarding compliance of the minimum height requirement for admission to Police Academy of at least 1.70m, common for both sexes.

    Investigation into the management of maintenance claims against public housing tenant

    As a result of a number of complaints to the Ombudsman and wider community concern, the Ombudsman conducted an investigation into the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Housing's processes for determining and pursuing maintenance debts against public housing tenants. The investigation found that many public housing tenants were charged thousands of dollars for the repair of damaged public housing, even when there was no evidence they caused the damage. The investigation also found that the department was wasting public resources and breaching its responsibility as a Model Litigant by making unreasonable demands for cost recovery and pursing claims to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

    Asian Region elects new Director

    The Asian Region of the IOI held an electronic ballot to fill the vacant position of one Asian Director on the IOI Board of Directors. Ms Un-Jong Pak, Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission in Korea, received the highest number of votes and was therefore declared elected as new Asian Director.

    Aage Thor Falkanger re-elected as Ombudsman

    Norwegian Parliamentary Ombudsman Aage Thor Falkanger was re-elected for another term of four years by the Parliament in November 2017. The Ombudsman is appointed by the Norwegian Parliament to safeguard the rights of individual citizens in their dealings with the public administration.

    On 6 December 2017, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) published its “Second European Union Minorities and Discrimination Survey (EU-MIDIS II): main results” report. Nearly a decade since FRA carried out a similar survey, the findings underline the need for specific and stronger measures to provide legal protection against discrimination coupled with effective sanctions.

    Much support for Polish High Commissioner of Human Rights for the institutions‘ anniversary

    IOI Secretary General Günther Kräuter congratulated Polish Ombudsman Adam Bodnar in Warsaw for the 30th anniversary of his institution. He furthermore stressed the importance of independence of Ombudsman institutions. IOI Europe president Rafael Ribo also expressed his concern about the human rights situation in Poland and other European countries.

    Study visit by Sorbonne International Administration Student Association

    On 11 December 2017 a group of the Sorbonne International Administration Student Association visited the headquarters of the International Ombudsman Institute in Vienna. The purpose of the visit was to gain an insight into the functioning of this global organization. IOI Secretary General Günther Kräuter answered the many questions this interested study group posed.

    Sustainability of Victoria’s child protection system put at risk by treatment of kinship carers

    The Victorian Ombudsman has tabled an investigation into the financial support provided to kinship carers, finding that the Department of Health and Human Services failed to act in the best interests of some of Victoria's most disadvantaged children by neglecting kinship carers. Tabling her report in the Victorian Parliament today, Ombudsman Deborah Glass said her investigation has exposed “an alarming weakness in our child protection system”.
