The Ararteko – Ombudsman of the Basque Country and the Basque Parliament have jointly organized the seminar “The Law of the Ararteko. Proposals for the Future. Rethinking Ombuds institutions” as part of the “Legeen geroa – The Future of Legislation” cycle, which will be held at the Basque Parliament on 12 and 13 June 2023. Registrations for the event are possible until 2 June 2023.

A Victorian Ombudsman investigation has found prisoner disciplinary hearings are still done “in the dark” and the potential for unfairness remains rife. The probe into the prison disciplinary process, which deals with prisoners who break prison rules, also found prisoners with mental health issues and cognitive impairment were not always offered adequate support and information.

2023-05-24Annual Report 2022: Time for the citizen
On Wednesday, 24 May 2023, the Dutch National Ombudsman, the Ombudsman for Children and the Ombudsman for Veterans presented their 2022 Annual Report to the House of Representatives: Time for the citizen. In it, they call on the government to listen to citizens more often, sooner and to better effect. Despite having seen some positive examples from the government, the ombudsmen continue to take a critical view, particularly with regard to the influence and control that citizens currently have over the work of the government.

Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman, Marie Anderson, publishes her second Quarterly Bulletin. This includes reports on complaints about the treatment provided by a GP to a patient with breast cancer, the way a Council dealt with a planning application for a wind turbine, and the care and treatment of patients within two Health Trusts. This edition of the Bulletin also provides a further update on the important work within her Office to prepare for the first ‘own initiative’ investigations and their ongoing research project to explore issues in public sector complaints handling.
