The Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) will take up its new function as National Preventive Mechanism within the OPCAT regime as of 1 July 2012 and is currently taking the necessary preparatory steps. In addition to filling staff vacancies the AOB’s new Human Rights Advisory Board recently convened for the first time.

Arne Fliflet new on the European Board
The Norwegian Ombudsman Arne Fliflet recently became member of the European Board by a vote in the General Assembly of the European region of the I.O.I. Arne Fliflet replaces the Greek Ombudsman Yorgos Kaminis in this function. Fliflet was elected Norwegian Ombudsman for the first time in 1990. He has subsequently been re-elected five times, the last appointment being in 2009.

The I.O.I. is pleased to announce that Diane Welborn, Ombudsman, Joint Office of Citizen Complaints for Dayton, Ohio has been elected as the new Director for the IOI North American Region. Diane Welborn will replace Bill Angrick after his retirement in June 2010.

Review by the NSW Ombudsman into police use of tasers
In March a man died after being tasered by the Police in the Sydney. The NSW Police Force set up a critical incident investigation team to investigate the death and announced that the NSW Ombudsman will provide independent oversight of the investigation.

New President of the European Union Civil Service Tribunal
Following the partial renewal of the Members of the European Union Civil Service Tribunal, Mr Sean Van Raepenbusch, who has been a judge at the Tribunal since 6 October 2005, was elected President of the European Union Civil Service Tribunal for the period from 7 October 2011 to 30 September 2014.

The Commissioner for Fundamental Rights has asked the Constitutional Court to examine the provisions of the Act on Public Education and to overview the Act on Vocational Training. Failing the necessary preparation period because of the short time until the entering into force of the two Acts the principle of the rule of law might be hurt.

The Commissioner for Administration and the Protection of Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Cyprus issued a statement regarding the measures taken to combat the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) and their compatibility with human rights law. The statement was deemed necessary because a number of citizens had reached out to the Ombudsman complaining about the measures and claiming that they violate their fundamental rights.
