The English-language version of the 2019 Annual Report of the Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman has now been published. Niels Fenger, who took up the position of Parliamentary Ombudsman on 1 December 2019, points out the value of uncovering recurring errors in order to help many citizens at the same time and stresses that a guiding principle for him is to apply the institution’s resources where they can be of the greatest possible use in protecting citizens’ legal rights.

The 30th anniversary of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) in 2019 was an opportunity to take stock of the committee’s achievements. Since 1989, the CPT has carried out more than 450 visits to Council of Europe member states, conducting its fact-finding work in police stations, prisons, immigration detention centres, psychiatric establishments, social care homes and other locations where persons may be deprived of their liberty.

Recently, the Control Yuan published the 2019 Annual Report. The report includes 6 case summaries, which are categorized into public expenditures, upholding discipline and safeguarding human rights. In 2019, the Control Yuan received 14,425 people’s complaints and issued 262 investigation reports. Also 18 impeachment and 116 corrective measure cases were proposed.
