L’Office de la Protection du Citoyen (OPC), Institution Nationale indépendante de Droits Humains, condamne sans réserve, les attaques violentes perpétrées contre le sous-commissariat de Bon Repos survenues dans la nuit du 30 au 31 janvier 2022 et qui ont occasionné la mort par balles d’un policier : Joseph Jork Blada. Un autre policier est sorti grièvement blessé au cours de ces attaques.

On 14 January 2022, Public Protector Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane welcomed Free State Premier Ms. Sisi Ntombela’s handover of the Estina Integrated Dairy Farm project to members of the Vrede community who were meant to benefit from the project when it was first launched in 2013.

2023-08-10The Ombudsman submits to Parliament a legislative proposal on the criminalisation of acts against human dignity
Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva submits to the National Assembly a legislative proposal for the criminalisation in the Criminal Code (CrC) of offences involving the intentional infliction of physical or mental pain or suffering that degrades human dignity. She announced this on 1 August 2023, in the programme “This Morning” on bTV in connection with the Stara Zagora case, where an 18-year-old girl was cut with a dummy knife by a man and as a result of the 24 injuries inflicted she received 400 stitches.

2023-08-17United Nations concerned at high rates of juvenile and Māori imprisonment
The United Nations Committee against Torture has called on the New Zealand Government to reduce the disproportionately high number of Māori in prisons and to improve the conditions of people in detention, noting that transformational change is needed. It also expressed concern about the use of pretrial detention, and lack of time limits for pretrial detention. Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier says the UN’s findings echo the concerns he has repeatedly raised in many of his inspection reports, including in prisons and health and disability facilities.

In the course of the 2017 Chief Executive (CE) Election, the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) lost two notebook computers, one containing the personal data of 3.78 million electors. Having examined the two reports on the incident, the Ombudsman commented on them today (July 18).

On 9 August 2023, Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina participated in the seminar entitled Ohranjanje psihofizičnega zdravja družin otrok s posebnimi potrebami (Preserving the psychophysical health of families of children with special needs), organised by Zveza Sožitje in Izola. Ombudsman Svetina believes that it is important that we are aware of the importance of preserving the psychophysical health of families every day, especially in these times when many families are facing the consequences of the natural disaster.

In 2021, as a result of persistent media reports, alleging violations of basic human rights and non-observance of prison regulations within the Corradino Correctional Facility, and after NGO “Moviment Graffitti” wrote to the Ombudsman highlighting these concerns, the Ombudsman Mr Anthony Mifsud decided to conduct this investigation in accordance with sub-article (2) of Article 13 of the Ombudsman Act (Cap. 385).
