The pressures on the complaints system for children’s care services are being highlighted in a new report by the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO). In a number of case studies the LGO shows some of the common issues it sees in children’s social care complaints, including failure to recognise a children’s service complaint or long delays in the process.

Deputy-Ombudsman criticises children's hearings at foreign missions
Deputy-Ombudsman Maija Sakslin said she was not convinced that children's rights, legal protection and best interests are implemented in hearings associated with family reunification applications at Finland's foreign missions. The Deputy-Ombudsman investigated the issue on her own initiative and found that questionable and incorrect procedures were in use.

On 28 June 2017 Hong Kong Ombudsman Connie Lau announced the completion of two own-motioned investigations, namely “The arrangement between Housing Department and Water Supplies Department regarding payment of water charges for common areas and vacant units in public housing estates” and “Food and Environmental Hygiene Department’s criteria for publicising the list of traders involved after issuing a Food Safety Order”.

Last week the New Zealand Office of the Ombudsman released the results of its most significant and comprehensive investigations. “Disclosure” presents the findings and recommendations of a review into processes for school closures and mergers in New Zealand, with a particular focus on the wide-scale school reorganisation that took place after the Canterbury earthquakes of 2011.
