2015-11-04Measuring and monitoring performance
As with any other public or private sector organisation, it is important that offices monitor, measure and report on their performance. This will provide the Ombudsman and senior staff with confidence in the work of the office. It will also allow the office to demonstrate to the community that it is making appropriate and efficient use of the funding and resources with which it is provided. In some jurisdictions, this information can also be of assistance to the Parliamentary Committees tasked with overseeing the work of the Ombudsman. Offices can use this information to support applications for additional funding and resources, particularly if there is a clear increase in a particular area of the office’s work. And finally, this information will be useful to demonstrate the office’s importance to the community.

2023-11-03Consultation of the regions on the IOI World Conference Themes
For the 13th IOI World Conference the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands proposed five themes to be discussed during the event. As the institution wanted to learn the views of other regions on the themes, they started online meetings with the IOI regional boards where the latter were invited to share their thoughts and ideas on the themes as viewed from their perspective.

2022-02-18Western Australia Ombudsman appointed for a further five-year-term
Chris Field, Western Australian Ombudsman and President of the International Ombudsman Institute has been appointed for a further five-year term. It is absolutely vital that an Ombudsman is utterly apolitical and impartial. It is therefore particularly pleasing that Mr Field was first appointed for a five-year term in 2007 under the Carpenter Labor Government, twice reappointed under the Barnett Liberal Government and now reappointed under the McGowan Labor Government.

IOI President Chris Field PSM was deeply honoured this week to provide an opening speech to an international conference on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Conference was attended by a number of Ambassadors, senior dignitaries from the Kingdom of Bahrain and Ombudsman and human rights commissioners.

At the request of Parliamentary Ombudsman of Finland, Petri Jääskeläinen, two officials from the Office of the Ombudsman of Finland performed unannounced inspections at the polling stations of eight municipalities in the region of Southern Finland during the European election day on 26 May. The purpose of the inspections was to determine the accessibility of polling stations, the possibilities for inclusion of persons with disabilities, and the realisation of the secrecy of the polls. One of the official conducting the inspection used a wheelchair.

On his second day in the Kingdom of Bahrain, IOI President Chris Field PSM undertook an official visit to the Bahrain Open Prison Complex. The Open Prison Complex comprises a large number of very modern townhouses, with a range of facilities, which prepare detainees for re-entry into the community with a range of skills. A very high level of freedom and rights is accorded to the detainees.

The Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, Mr. Ajaz Ali Khan, helped a complainant whose pension dues were not paid despite the completion of all required formalities, complaining that the department was delaying the matter on flimsy pretexts.
