Mental Health Reform has today launched a new report entitled, The Advocacy Needs of Mental Health Service Users Living in the Community: A Pilot Study. The report examines the need for independent, one-to-one advocacy supports for people who use mental health services and who need help to make decisions or access their rights and entitlements.

Being an Ombudsman in higher education
Rob Behrens, the chair of the European Network of Ombudsmen in Higher Education published a new study entitled "Being an Ombudsman in Higher Education". He therein reviews the lived experience of ombudsmen in 18 countries. Having had unique access to ENOHE archives and drawing on a network-wide survey, he has produced the comprehensive account of European practitioners.

Preocupación por el incremento de fallecimientos por ahorcamiento en el Complejo Penitenciario Federal I de Ezeiza
El pasado sábado 8 de julio, por la tarde, se produjo la muerte por ahorcamiento de un detenido alojado en el Pabellón A de la Unidad Residencial IV del CPF I de Ezeiza. Se trata del séptimo fallecimiento bajo esa modalidad en el establecimiento, misma cantidad que en los treinta y seis meses anteriores (dos en 2014, tres en 2015 y dos más en 2016).

Victorian Ombudsman to conduct OPCAT-style inspection
The Victorian Ombudsman will inspect the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in July 2017. This inspection follows the April announcement of the Ombudsman's investigation into changes needed in Victoria to implement the UN's Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT).

At the General Meeting held on 13th June 2017 Ms. Victoria Pearman was elected the new President of the Caribbean Ombudsman Association (CAROA) and a new CAROA Council was appointed effective on 1st July 2017.
