Ontario Ombudsman marks decade of progress in 2014/2015 Annual Report
Ontario Ombudsman André Marin today released his tenth annual report, marking the end of an historic year – and decade – that saw the largest investigation in the history of the office, the enactment of legislation extending the Ombudsman’s mandate to municipalities, school boards and universities, and an 86% increase in complaints received since 2009-2010.

Ombudsman community mourns death of Prof. Roy Gregory
It is with great sorrow that the International Ombudsman Institute has learned that Roy Gregory, Emeritus Professor of Politics, died in London on 14 July 2015. In his scholarly work Prof. Gregory made a significant contribution to promoting and developing the concept of Ombudship. The IOI is therefore pleased to share with you a tribute written by his longtime colleague at the University of Reading, Dr. Philip Giddings.

Prof. Lipowicz leaves office as Human Rights Defender
On 7 August 2015 the Senate approved the appointment of Dr. Adam Bodnar as seventh Polish Human Rights Defender. Mr Bodnar, who will take office after having taken the oath before the Sejm (Parliament), will succeed Prof. Irena Lipowicz. On behalf of the international Ombudsman community, the IOI would like to thank Prof. Lipowicz for the valuable and significant contributions she made as a member of the IOI Board of Directors.

June information bulletin of the Public Defender
The Public Defender has presented June information bulletin about the efforts of the Public Defender's Office. The key topic in the information bulletin is the visit and important meetings of the Public Defender and his delegation to Brussels. The ongoing events of Georgia, situation in human rights, threats in conflict regions and many sensitive and painful issues of our population were discussed at the meetings held in NATO, the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Open Society European Policy Institute of Brussels.

Children’s Ombudsman highlights gaps in the oversight of children’s residential centres
An investigation by the Ombudsman for Children found significant gaps in the approach to registering, inspecting and monitoring of children’s residential centres which are run by private and voluntary agencies. He has recommended that the inspection of these centres should transfer to HIQA without delay.

Denying Patients the free Entitlement to Medicines is causing an Injustice that needs to be remedied
The report is on four cases that the Commissioner for Health investigated and about which he is at an impasse with Department of Health for the last two years. One case concerns a Type 2 diabetic patient who had been prescribed Glargine Insulin by his Consultant Diabetologist. The Department’s policy is to give this type of insulin only to Type 1 patients, and, therefore, the patient was denied the treatment needed. There must be, of course, other patients with the same predicament.
