From 27 – 29 September 2023, the “UN World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna 1993 – Strengthening Imperatives 30 Years After”, organised by the University of Vienna and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights, took place in Vienna. The Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB), the Public Protector of the Republic of South Africa and the Ombudswoman of the Republic of Croatia were among the many speakers who came together to reiterate the three imperatives of the Vienna Conference 1993: universality, guarantees and democratisation.

He participated as a speaker at a roundtable discussion about challenges in the field of human rights, primarily in the fields of digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and climate change.

2023-10-05Ombudsman implements new child-friendly section on the ombudsman website
Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier says the aim of this new section is to provide information to tamariki, rangatahi and whānau who may be considering making a complaint about Oranga Tamariki or its care or custody providers. The development of the information for children is part of a wider programme to enhance the Ombudsman’s oversight of Oranga Tamariki.

2023-11-10Ombudsman urges improvements in how trees are protected in Northern Ireland’s planning system
A report published by the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) into how trees are protected has found that despite 369 tree protection breaches reported between 2019 and 2022, only one resulted in enforcement action being taken, and none led to prosecution. The report also found there was a lack of clear information for the public on Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), and that information about which trees are protected should be made more accessible.
