Chief Ombudsman’s opinion on OIA requests about Operation Burnham
Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier today released his Final Opinion on five complaints concerning the New Zealand Defence Force’s withholding of information related to Operation Burnham in Afghanistan in 2010. Peter Boshier found the NZDF was justified in withholding most of the requested information under the Official Information Act.

Victorian Ombudsman to re-investigate insurers’ handling of workers compensation claims and WorkSafe oversight
Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass has begun a follow up investigation to her previous Investigation into the management of complex workers compensation claims and WorkSafe oversight. In that 2016 investigation, she found that Victoria’s workers compensation scheme had failed some particularly vulnerable people.

Homeless family left in crowded conditions while council delayed making decision
A mother and her five children were accommodated in a damp and mouldy single bedroom, too small for the number of people, by Ealing council while it took too long to decide their homelessness status. A Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman investigation found the council’s delays added three months onto a six month stay in the unsuitable accommodation.

NHS failing patients with mental health problems
Vulnerable patients with mental health conditions are being badly let down by the NHS, causing them and their families needless suffering and distress, according to a Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman report published today. The Ombudsman has also found that NHS mental healthcare staff can lack the capacity, skills and training they need to do their job effectively, and do not always have the support they need to learn from mistakes.

Ombudsman Peter Tyndall Monday opened a new family and patient room at the Mater Hospital, Dublin. The family room is part of the Mater’s “end of life” care service and will give families who are losing a loved one a quiet, comfortable and private space where they can also stay the night.

The total number of complaints delivered in 2017 to the Ombudsman was 8,191. People increasingly turn to the Ombudsman's Office with their problems in the sphere of social security and also number of complaints concerning work and employment increased by 39 percent.

Commonwealth Ombudsman released NDIA report
Commonwealth Ombudsman Michael Manthorpe released a report on the 15 May 2018 into the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) handling of reviews of decisions under the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013. The report discusses systemic issues highlighted by complaints and stakeholder feedback including significant backlogs, delays in decision making and poor communication practices.

Commencement of the Ombudsman Act 2017
The new Ombudsman Act 2017 commenced on 31 January 2018. The coming into effect of this new Act means that any person who is unhappy about how any government office deals with them, can complain to the Ombudsman. Furthermore, the Ombudsman is empowered by this new Act to not only investigate appropriate complaints that it received but can also initiate investigations on its own from information received from any other source including the media.

Ombudsman meets colleagues from Poland and other Baltic states
On 21-22 May, Ombudsman, head of Children Rights Division and lawyer of Prevention Unit meet Children Ombudsmen of Poland and Lithuania and representatives of the Chancellor of Justice Office of Estonia. Such meetings happen annually and participants discuss topical children rights issues in Poland and Baltic states.
