    Ombudsman publishes 2014 annual report

    Until now, the Ombudsman’s Annual Report has been published at the beginning of October in the year following the report year. This is late. With effect from the report year of 2014, the process has successfully been moved forward so that the Report will now be published already in April of the following year. We are very pleased with that. Hopefully, it will help make the Annual Report even more topical and relevant.

    Public service complaints to the Ombudsman rise by 11%

    Complaints to the Ombudsman about public services rose by 11% to over 3,500 in 2014. Launching his annual report today (Wednesday 10 June) Ombudsman Peter Tyndall said the increase was mainly due to the additional 200 public bodies which came within his jurisdiction for a full year for the first time in 2014. These included bodies in the education sector such as the State Examinations Commission and Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI).

    The Spanish Ombudsman, Soledad Becerril, has written to the European Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly, with proposals to improve the operations of deportation of foreigners currently being monitored by European Union Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States (FRONTEX).

    At the 8th Biennial Caribbean Ombudsman Association (CAROA) Conference the Ombudsman of Sint Maarten, Dr. Nilda Arduin, was elected as the new President of the Caribbean association for the period July 2015 – June 2017. As President of CAROA, Dr. Arduin will endeavor to broaden the knowledge and awareness of good governance within the Caribbean region.

    Manitoba Ombudsman releases 2014 annual reports

    Manitoba Ombudsman Charlene Paquin has released her office’s annual reports for the calendar year 2014, including a report under The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and The Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) and a separate report under The Ombudsman Act and The Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act (PIDA).

    Only one in three people complain to a public service when they are unhappy, according to new research

    A research by the Parliamentary & Health Service Ombudsman published today shows that just one-third of people that are unhappy after using a public service actually make a complaint, despite an overwhelming number feeling that they should.The research is based on the results of a national survey, which questioned 4,263 people and focused on the public's attitude over the last 12 months to complaining about those public services, such as the NHS in England, which the ombudsman service investigates in the event of unresolved complaints.

    ACRC Korea and Commonwealth Ombudsman sign MoU

    The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) of Korea (Chairman Sungbo Lee) and the Commonwealth Ombudsman of Australia (Ombudsman Colin Neave) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Canberra on June 10th, 2015 in order to enhance rights and interests of Koreans and Australians living in the other country and cooperation between the two Ombudsmen.

    Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has today, Thursday 25 June, welcomed the announcement by Minister Brendan Howlin and Minister Leo Varadkar that his Office will be able to examine complaints from the public about private nursing homes.
