A NSW Ombudsman investigation has identified failures within Insurance and iCare NSW’s (icare’s) management of workers compensation premiums between 2017 and 2023. Tabled in NSW Parliament on 29 May 2026, the Investigation into icare’s processing of actual wage declarations and hindsight adjustments to workers compensation premiums found that icare engaged in unreasonable conduct by failing to exercise its statutory functions within a reasonable timeframe.

2022-07-072021 Report: Cases handled rise 6% to a new high
In 2021, a record volume of 12,219 new cases were processed, as a result of a 6% annual increase in the number of complaints admitted. Based on 2017, the beginning of the first mandate of the current Ombudsman, Maria Lúcia Amaral, the accumulated growth in the number of new complaints processed is 57%.

On 22 October 2024, the Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier published his 2023/2024 Annual Report which shows more and more people are turning to the Ombudsman for help. “In 2023/24 I completed the highest number of complaints and protected disclosures ever,” Mr Boshier says.
