EUROPE: The Council of Europe’s European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) published its annual report

The Council of Europe’s European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) published its annual report, calling for timely action against extremist organisations that promote racism to avoid an escalation of violence and related criminal activities.

SPAIN: The Spanish Ombudsman inaugurates the twinning project in Turkey

The Spanish Ombudsman, Soledad Becerril, recalled that human rights know no borders, during her speech before the Turkish Parliament, on the occasion of the commencement of the twining project for support to the Turkish Ombudsman.

UK: Family to receive £130k after their lives put at risk by Home Office failings

The lives of members of a family were put at risk because the Home Office didn’t listen to their concerns about an overseas criminal and continually failed to put right their earlier mistakes, according to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.

IRELAND: Information Commissioner welcomes removal of FOI fee

Information Commissioner, Peter Tyndall, has welcomed the Government’s proposal to abolish the €15 application fee for making FOI requests.  Both he and the former Commissioner, Emily O’Reilly, have previously publicly expressed their view that the application fee acted as a disincentive to members of the public seeking access to information held by public bodies.

BERMUDA: Arlene Brock named Fulbright Scholar

The former Ombudsman of Bermuda, Ms. Arlene Brock, was granted a Fulbright Scholarship on Thursday, July 3rd of 2014.
