NPM Workshop on communication skills to be held in Vienna
After two very successful workshops with an NPM focus in Latvia (2015) and Lithuania (2016) the IOI will hold a follow-up NPM workshop with a special focus on developing skills to optimise interaction and communication with challenging conversation partners in Vienna (Austria) from 25 – 27 September 2017. Launch of the Annual Report 2016
In May 2017, the European Ombudsman, Emily O'Reilly, presented the Ombudsman’s Annual Report 2016. This year showed again how the work of an ombudsman can have a positive effect over time on the quality of the EU administration, in line with the strategy of the European Ombudsman to increase the impact, relevance and visibility of the office.

Joint project of the Ombudsman and UN OHCHR being implemented
The Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees have been cooperating on combating violence since 2016. A project on “Empowerment of Women in Displacement Situations” continued this year and covered four regions.

Signing of Memorandum of Understanding with FCO
On 16 May 2017 IOI President Peter Tyndall and the President of the Forum of Canadian Ombudsman (FCO), Ms Nora Farrell signed a Memorandum of Understanding by which both organisations express their willingness to strongly cooperate in the future.President Tyndall further took the opportunity of his stay to visit the Toronto Office of the Ombudsman of Ontario.

People’s Advocate issues special reports on migration and on children's rights
The Office of the People’s Advocate issued the English versions of two special reports. The first one focuses on the rights of children living in residential institutions and children’s homes; the second one investigates the role of the People’s Advocate with respect to migration issues.
