IRELAND: Highlights of IPA/Ombudsman 30th Anniversary Conference available

2014 marked 30 years of the Office of the Ombudsman in Ireland. As part of this anniversary, the Ombudsman's Office co-hosted a conference with the Institute of Public Administration (IPA) on the topic of “Held to Account: Responsibility and Accountability in the Public Service”. Former IOI President, Dame Beverley Wakem, and newly elected second  IOI Vicepresident and Ombudsman of Ireland, Peter Tyndall, were among the speakers.

APOR: Australia and New Zealand publish guidelines for complaint management

A joint Australia/New Zealand Standard, AS/NZS 10002:2014 Guidelines for complainant management in organizations, was published on 29 October 2014 to provide general guidance on the objectives and design of an effective complaints handling system, for both public and private sector organisations.

BAHRAIN: Ombudsman Office held two-day workshop on "Investigating Serious Incidents"

The Ombudsman Office organized a two-day workshop titled "Investigating Serious Incidents". The workshop was held at the Office's headquarters in the Seef area and was conducted by Pauline McCabe, the former Prisoner Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, and Clare McVeigh, a Senior Investigators in Northern Ireland.

MACEDONIA: Celebration of 25th Jubilee from adoption of Convention of the Rights of the Child

A celebration of the 25th year from the adoption of the Convention on the rights of the child was hosted by UNICEF in cooperation with the Ombudsman in Skopje. At the celebration the new interactive online game about the Convention on the rights of the child, which was produced by UNICEF, was promoted. Through this game children can learn about their rights and the mechanisms for their protection.

CANADA/ONTARIO: Ontario must crack "code of silence" among correctional officers involved in use of excessive force

Ontario Ombudsman André Marin called on the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services to crack the pervasive “code of silence” under which some guards in the province’s correctional institutions use excessive force against inmates and conspire to cover it up.

CHINA/HONG KONG: Ombudsman probes government regulation of rehabilitation transport services to persons with mobility difficulties

The Ombudsman, Ms Connie Lau, declared today a direct investigation into the Administration’s implementation of the policy formulated in 2007 on provision of special transport services to persons with disabilities who cannot use public transport, and any measures against unauthorised operations of rehabilitation transport services to protect the safety and interests of persons with disabilities.
