KOREA: ACRC implements “Act on the Protection of the Public Interest Whistleblowers”
According to Chairperson Kim, Yong-ran from the Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission (ACRC), Korea has implemented the “Act on the Protection of the Public Interest Whistleblowers” in order to protect whistleblowers who report any violation of the public interest in both public and private sectors.
Up to now, Korean law did not provide any protection for whistleblowers who reported harmful behaviour for the public health and safety or the environment. With the implementation of this new law, however, public interest whistleblowers can now be protected and supported. The act contains provisions like the payment of relief money, preventive measures to prohibit any disadvantageous action and the payment of rewards under certain circumstances.
