Armenia | Unannounced visit for the foreigners keeping in the “Nubarashen” penitentiary institution has been conducted

On June 15, the representatives of the RA Human Rights Defender’s Office conducted an unannounced visit to the “Nubarashen” penitentiary institution to study the situation on ensuring the rights of foreigners. This was executed in the framework of cooperation with the UNHCR Representation in Armenia. 

The detention conditions of foreigners, including asylum seekers deprived of liberty, the state of ensuring their rights, as well as their compliance to the established requirements were examined based on the special working principles.

During the visit, several issues, including those related to the overcrowding of cells were reported. The representatives of the Defender’s Office presented the problems to the staff of the penitentiary institution. Respective letters were addressed to the RA Ministry of Justice.
