WORLD | QMU online Master’s degree in dispute resolution

Since January 2015 Queen Margaret University (QMU) has delivered an entirely online Master’s Degree in Dispute Resolution. The underpinning philosophy of the course is combining practical experience of dispute resolution with the latest academic thought and research, to provide students with enhanced transferable theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Feedback from students has been very positive. Examples include:

  • “You learn so much about the bigger picture of dispute resolution and complaint handling; where your practice fits in that landscape; you learn what others in similar backgrounds do in their organisation and how you can apply some of that good practice to improve your own practice.”

  • “The tutors are extremely helpful and supportive. They want you to succeed and do your best which really shines through.”

  • “I definitely wish I had come across this course sooner. I had been curious about this subject area for some years, and I really wanted to improve and develop my skills in this area.”

QMU is very pleased to have overseas students on this postgraduate degree programme who are now partway through their studies (these include students from Australia and the Caribbean) and would like to expand the numbers of international student as their very different experiences greatly enrich the learning experience for all and vice versa.

The Programme is structured in such a way that students can exit early with either a Postgraduate Certificate in Dispute Resolution (completion of three modules) or Postgraduate Diploma in Dispute Resolution (completion of six modules). Modules within this course include:

  • Fundamentals of Dispute Resolution
  • Ombuds and Complaints Techniques
  • Negotiation
  • Mediation
  • Communication in Dispute Settings
  • Research Methods
  • Dissertation

The fee to study for the full MSc in Dispute Resolution is currently UK£5,503 (overseas students are charged the same fees as home students). The full Programme consists of seven modules, six costing UK£688 each plus a Dissertation module at UK£1375. Modules can be taken individually and paid for individually. For those wishing to self-fund, QMU offers a special payment plan to help spread the cost.
