CROATIA | Ombudswoman elected member of GANHRI Working Group on Ageing

Ombudswoman Lora Vidović was elected as a member of the General Assembly of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) Working Group on Ageing on 6 March, 2017 in Geneva. The Working Group is tasked with making improvements regarding the mutual cooperation of GANHRI members in the field of the protection of human rights of elderly as well as with enhancing strategic activities at international fora including contributing to the UN mechanisms.

As one of two representatives of the European Human Rights Institutions, she was elected at the General Meeting of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI), which she has been chairing since 2016. The eight members of the Working Group on Ageing also consist of NHRI representatives from Asia and the Pacific, North and South America as well as Africa.

One of the  priorities of the Working Group is advocating for the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons. Although human rights are universal and relate to all citizens, the fact that older persons are not explicitly referred to in the international documents may present a challenge for the protection of their rights; therefore, the implementation of the Convention might contribute to the strengthening of their rights.
