Australia | NSW Ombudsman Bruce Barbour leaves office

The current term of office of New South Wales Ombudsman Bruce Barbour ended on 30 June 2015. After 15 years in office, Mr Barbour will be succeeded by Prof. John McMillan, who will commence a two year term as Acting Ombudsman on 1 August 2015.

During his 15-year career as Ombudsman of New South Wales, Mr Barbour very actively contributed to the IOI and its work as Regional President of the IOI’s Australasian & Pacific Region, as partner in joint training events on the topic of “Unreasonable Complainants” and as the host of the Sydney IOI Board meeting in November 2007, which paved the way for a major re-orientation of the IOI and eventually led to the relocation of the IOI’s Headquarters from Edmonton/Alberta to Vienna/Austria in 2009.

In recognition of the exceptional contribution Mr Barbour has made to the IOI, he was awarded IOI Honorary Life Membership in October 2014.

Ms Chris Wheeler currently serves as acting Ombudsman until 1 August 2015, when Professor John McMillan will commence a two year term as Acting Ombudsman. Prof. McMillan is a former Commonwealth Ombudsman and the inaugural Australian Information Commissioner.
