BackMr. Joe Loran was appointed Acting Alberta Ombudsman as of April 16, 2017, upon the retirement of the province’s eighth Ombudsman, Peter Hourihan. Mr. Loran had served as Deputy Ombudsman since May 22, 2012. Previously, he served as the Executive Director for the Law Enforcement and Oversight Branch with Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. Prior to working for the provincial government, he spent over 32 years with the RCMP in a variety of policing duties retiring as a Chief Superintendent in the role of Deputy Criminal Operations Officer for “K” Division (Alberta) in Edmonton.
Originally from Saskatoon, Mr. Loran served in the provinces of British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Alberta in a wide variety of roles throughout his career. Some of his policing career highlights are: implementing the Integrated Response to Organized Crime in Alberta (now referred to as CFSEU); implementing the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams Ltd. (ALERT); involved in planning and operational oversight of major events such as Asia Pacific Economic Conference in Vancouver, G8 in Kananaskis, 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, and G8 in Huntsville Ontario. His policing background includes: a variety of investigative roles; protective policing; adjudicating on RCMP discipline matters; intelligence work; administration and risk mitigation.
