Ireland | FOI 20 Conference: 20 Years of Freedom of Information legislation in Ireland

IOI President and Irish Information Commissioner Peter Tyndall hosted a conference to mark 20 years of the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) in Ireland on Friday 13 April in Dublin.  The half-day conference reflected on the impact of FOI in Ireland and its contribution to the reform of the public service.

The key note speaker was European Ombudsman and former Irish Information Commissioner, Emily O'Reilly.   Ms O’Reilly outlined her experience of being Information Commissioner for ten years and gave her views on some of the key cases she dealt with during her tenure.

Former Minister of State Eithne Fitzgerald, who introduced the FOI legislation, provided an insightful background to the development of the FOI Bill. Investigations journalist with national broadcaster RTE, Conor Ryan, set out his experience and observations as a user of the FOI Act.

The full text of Mr Tyndall's speech is available here on the Office of the Information Commissioner website.
